The first trial recorded cholesterol study is the ‘Coronary Primary Prevention Trial’. It provided evidence that if you reduce the levels of LDL cholesterol then you can reduce your risk of coronary heart disease. This was especially relevant to men.

The Coronary Trial was produced between the years for 1973 and 1983. There were a total of 3,800 men who participated in the trial with high levels of cholesterol. Half of the participants were given a drug called cholestyramine, as well as orders for a cholesterol lowering diet.

The other half of the group was given a placebo, which is a sugar pill to make the participants think that they are receiving the drug. They were also prescribed orders for the same diet.

The ending results proved that the group that was prescribed the drug had about an 8.5 percent decrease in their cholesterol levels. The group given the drug also had a 12.6 decrease in their LDL levels. Overall, the drug resulted in a 19 percent decrease of risk from coronary heart disease.

Statin Drugs

A more recent cholesterol study performed by researchers from Harvard Medical School compared the effectiveness of a high dose of Lipitor with a less powerful dose of Provachol, both of which are statin drugs. Statins are a type of cholesterol medication that prevents the body from producing cholesterol.

The study found that those using the more potent Lipitor had average LDL levels of 62 compared to 98 for the Pravachol group. They also had a much lower occurrence of heart attack and death.

While these and many other cholesterol studies show the effectiveness of drugs to control cholesterol, those drugs also can have severe side effects. There is a better way.

Cholesterol Research Shows A Healthier Approach

Cholesterol Research has shown that in many cases, the issue of high cholesterol can be treated without having to prescribe medications. A change in diet or adding certain nutritional supplements can bring down cholesterol levels for most individuals.

A 2006 cholesterol study published in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition followed 66 individuals for one year. They were given a menu to follow which included 1 gram of plant sterols, 10 grams of fiber, 22.5 grams of soy protein, and 23 grams of almonds per 1000 kilocalories.

At the end of the year, 30% of the participants had followed all aspects of the diet. These individuals were able to lower their cholesterol levels by more than 20%.

The point here is not that statin drugs don't work. We know they do but there are many known side effects. The point is that lowering cholesterol naturally is the safest and healthiest way to go. Professor David Jenkins, the author of the study stated, "the study's findings suggest that the average person can do a lot to improve their health through diet."
