Choosing A Multivitamin
Can Be Challenging

If you are in the process of choosing a multivitamin, we can help. Whether you are trying to lower your cholesterol levels, improve your general health, or just want to make sure you are getting your recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals, multivitamins will help.

The choice you make is an important decision and one that should the thoroughly researched. If you make a poor choice you will find no benefit and end up wasting your money. If you make a good choice you will notice more energy, improved skin and nails, better mood, and greater muscle tone.

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

What makes one multivitamin stand out from another? Why is it that one multivitamin improves my mood, muscle tone, and energy level while another seems to be nothing more than a placebo?

When choosing a multivitamin you will run into varying qualities. We have divided these into the good, the bad and the ugly.

Low Quality (The ugly)-These are low priced drug store vitamins that meet minimal manufacturing requirements. They may provide some benefit, but there is really no way of knowing if they are getting into your system and actually improving your health.

Better Quality (Not really "bad" but could be higher quality)-These vitamins are one step above the ugly. They may have good ingredients and if you read the ingredient label you would probably be impressed. You may even notice some benefit from these, but many of the ingredients will go through your system without being absorbed.

High Quality (The good)-These are the only quality of vitamins that we recommend. For a multivitamin to be considered good it must be scientifically designed for ingredients and absorption. When taking high quality vitamins most people will be able to tell that they are benefiting from the ingredients that are being absorbed into their bodies.

Ingredients

Develop the habit of reading ingredient labels. A high quality multivitamin should have more than a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals. It's list of ingredients should also include amino acids and antioxidants.

To address multiple health issues it is helpful for it to have a variety of herbs and other food based ingredients. Ingredients such as zeaxanthin, lycopene, and lutein are some food extracts that have important health benefits.

Absorption

If you are choosing a multivitamin, realize that the major cause of not experiencing benefits is poor absorption. A vitamin may have everything your body needs, but if it is not absorbed it will be of little help in improving your quality of life.

To be properly absorbed the ingredients must be designed to work together synergistically. For instance, calcium requires vitamin d to be present in order for absorption to take place. When a multivitamin is manufactured, the synergy of different ingredients working together must be considered.

While most people can't determine synergy by looking at a label, the manufacturer should discuss it in their literature. Take the time to read what they have to say about absorption and synergy.

The Delivery System

The other important issue regarding absorption is the delivery system. Many low end vitamins are manufactured with binders that may not dissolve in the stomach or digestive track. These vitamins may go all the way through our digestive system intact and end up being flushed down the toilet. Fortunately today, with consumers becoming more educated and standards being improved, this is less and less of an issue.

Even if a vitamin is dissolved in the stomach, stomach acids can actually destroy some of the ingredients. In order to get around this issue a new technology in vitamins has been created.

When you are choosing a multivitamin look for one with an enteric coating. This coating will not dissolve in stomach acid. However, when it reaches the small intestine it dissolves and the nutrients are then released and more easily absorbed.

How Long Does It Take To Notice Benefits?

One question that is often asked is "how long will it take for me to experience the benefits of multivitamins?" This varies greatly from person to person. My personal experience has been that I notice the benefits happen suddenly around day 10. Others notice a gradual improvement in their health over a couple of months.

I usually suggest giving nutritional supplements 60 days before passing judgment on them. Remember, many people who already are in good health may not notice the benefit they are receiving from the vitamins and minerals they take.

Choosing a multivitamin requires time and research. Don't make your decision based on advertisements or hype. Check the ingredients. Read the experiences of those who have been taking the vitamins. Quality nutritional supplements are worth the time and effort you take to find them. Having done this, you will no longer be flushing your money down the drain.
